AISHA DURHAM WINS PRESTIGIOUS MARSHA HOUSTON AWARD FROM THE NATIONAL COMMUNICATION ASSOCIATION

Aisha Durham

Aisha Durham, Associate Professor in the Department of Communication and Affiliated Associate Professor in the Departments of Humanities & Cultural Studies, Women's & Gender Studies, and Africana Studies at the University of South Florida, recently received the inaugural Marsha Houston Award from the National Communication Association (NCA).

The award is named for Dr. Marsha Houston, noted African American feminist Communication scholar, who was instrumental in helping raise and duly ensure recognition of the collective academic voices of African American women and other women of color in conventional feminist communication. Dr. Durham's cutting-edge research offers substantial methodological, theoretical, and practical insights that resonate across several disciplines and areas of study. Durham’s interdisciplinary research poses timely and necessary challenges to Communication Studies scholarship and embraces transdisciplinary perspectives and embodied cultural experiences. At the intersections of Black feminism, intercultural communication, and hip-hop studies, Durham’s critical cultural Communication scholarship takes seriously Black women and girls’ communication lives and futures.

“NCA’s annual awards honor Communication scholars’ teaching, scholarship, and service,” NCA Interim Executive Director Linda Taliaferro, CAE, said. “NCA is proud to recognize Dr. Durham’s significant contributions to the Communication discipline with this award.”

Dr. Durham’s award was presented on November 20 at the NCA 107th Annual Convention in Seattle, WA. For more information about NCA’s awards program, visit their website
