USF Tampa campus adds 44 new trees in honor of Arbor Day
The USF Tree Committee, which is comprised of USF faculty, staff, students, and volunteers from the City of Tampa, Hillsborough County, the city of Temple Terrace, Tampa Electric (TECO), and Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, hosted a tree planting ceremony on March 28i n honor of Arbor Day (April 28).

Chemistry students practice presentation skills at Castle Conference
The USF College of Arts and Sciences Department of Chemistry held its annual Raymond N. Castle Student Research Conference in early March. The conference, which is organized largely by students, showcases both undergraduate and graduate student research with the intent for “young scientists to develop the necessary communication skills to excel in the future.”

Rhetoric professor recognized with national award on the philosophy of communication
Dr. Nathan Johnson, an associate professor in the Department of English at the University of South Florida College of Arts and Sciences, was recognized with the National Communication Association’s 2022 Distinguished Book Award for the Philosophy of Communication Division. The Philosophy of Communication Division recognizes philosophical works that better illuminate human communication.

The USF College of Arts and Sciences’ Im/migrant Well-Being Research Center and co-sponsor Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute at The George Washington University (GWU) hosted the inaugural biennial conference, “Im/migrant Well-Being: A Nexus for Research & Policy” at the Hilton, St. Petersburg on February 17-18.

Dr. Julia Koets earns national creative writing fellowship
Dr. Julia Koets, an assistant professor of creative writing in the USF College of Arts and Sciences Department of English, is one of 36 writers from across the nation selected to receive a 2023 Creative Writing Fellowship of $25,000 from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA)—one of the largest funders of the arts and arts education established by Congress since 1965.

Dr. Sarath Witanachchi elected Senior Member of the National Academy of Inventors
Dr. Sarath Witanachchi, USF College of Arts and Sciences Department of Physics chair and professor, is one of five USF faculty members who have been named by the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) to its new class of 2023 Senior Members.
