Faculty Member, Kiersty Cox and MLIS Alumni Present at Two Recent Conferences

Kiersty Cox and James Sholz

Faculty member, Kiersty Cox, along with USF MLIS Alumni, James Sholz recently had the opportunity to present at the SELA conference in July.

In regard to this conference and their presentation, Kiersty has stated, “Our presentation was called, AI & Word Clouds: Identifying Keywords and Research Questions. In this presentation, we described the use of an assignment I created for LIS 2005 which teaches not only appropriate use of AI ChatBots but also helps students identify possible research questions, and keywords and to test their ideas against what AI creates. Students analyze the results and hone their keywords and research questions accordingly. I discussed the use of a long version of this assignment in a for credit course while Jay discussed how a short version of this is effective in "one-shot" library instruction sessions, or as a value-added assignment provided by librarians embedded in classes with a research assignment.”

They also had a the opportunity to present in April at the 10th Annual Africa Conference at Tennessee State University.

For this conference, their presentation was entitled, Empowering Equity: Fostering Diversity and Information Literacy through Wikipedia Editing. In the presentation they discussed the USF, TSU and Wikimedia partnership which strives to increase diversity in articles, and voices represented in Wikipedia while teaching and reinforcing information literacy skills at the same time.

Great work, Kiersty and James! We look forward to more presentations in the future!
