On January 29th, USF’s Student Health Informatics Club (SHIC) hosted a healthcare-focused Generative AI workshop featuring guest speaker Mr. Mike Bice, an expert in healthcare administration and an instructor in artificial intelligence and health informatics. The workshop provided attendees with an in-depth look at Generative AI, its historical evolution, and its expanding role in healthcare.
Mr. Bice examined how AI is transforming healthcare through automation, augmentation, and acceleration. Collectively referred to as the “3 A’s,” he discussed how AI’s ability to automate tasks, optimize management processes, and enhance risk assessment has contributed to advancements in medical treatment and research. The discussion also addressed AI’s dual impact on the job market—eliminating roles where automation is feasible while creating new opportunities for professionals skilled in AI integration.
Beyond its benefits, Mr. Bice also tackled the perils associated with AI implementation in healthcare. Security risks, such as phishing scams, data poisoning, and cyber threats, along with ethical concerns like bias in devices, software, or user interactions, all present significant challenges.
While the session explored real-world applications of AI in healthcare, it highlighed the need for skilled professionals to ensure its safe and effective integration. Following the presentation, Mr. Bice opened the floor for attendees to ask questions and engage in an interactive Q&A session.
As part of its ongoing commitment to preparing students to navigate the evolving landscape of AI, SHIC is hosting a Prompt Engineering workshop on February 19th, which will also be led by Mr. Bice. For event details and registration information, visit here.
