BIO

Dr. James E. Andrews is a Professor of Information Science and Informatics at the School of Information (iSchool), University of South Florida. He received his Doctor of Philosophy in Information Science from the University of Missouri – Columbia, where he also earned a Master’s in Library and Information Science. Dr. Andrews’ doctoral work was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Library of Medicine (NLM) as a Predoctoral Medical Informatics Fellow. His research focuses on topics in information behaviors and communication (particularly in the context of cancer and genetics), standards and controlled terminologies, and various topics in library and information science. Dr. Andrews has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Defense, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), and others. He is co-editor of the first book on Clinical Research Informatics (Springer-Verlag), which is now in its third edition, has co-authored a number of peer-reviewed publications, and has presented nationally and internationally at numerous conferences. In addition to being a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA), he recently served on the Board of Directors of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST) and is active in other professional and academic organizations, including service on grant review panels and as a reviewer for several journals in health informatics and information science. He also served as Director of the USF School of Information for 12 years. Dr. Andrews is an honorably discharged veteran who served in the US Navy as an Intelligence Analyst on an Admiral's Staff and is recipient of the Navy Achievement Medal.
