TEACHING INTERESTS

  • Use of evidence-based, active learning teaching strategies
  • Providing course-based undergraduate research experiences in cell and molecular biology
  • Development and implementation of peer learning assistant programs in laboratory courses
  • Helping students develop skills reading, writing, and presenting scientific literature
  • Mentoring graduate teaching assistants and adjunct lab instructors

COURSES

PCB 3023L/3063L Combined Research Lab for Cell and Molecular (CAM) majors

This 2 credit lab course provides an introductory research experience in molecular biology. Students learn to read scientific literature, form hypotheses, design experiments, collect and analyze data, and present findings in a laboratory notebook, lab meeting style presentations, and through writing a scientific research paper.

  • Provides IDS 4914 Advanced Undergraduate Research Experience

BSC 4933 Learning Assistant in Molecular Biology

Students that have successfully completed the combined research lab course can serve as peer learning assistants in the lab and complete a pedagogy teaching theory course through the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning.

PCB 3023L Cell Biology Lab

Students conduct a methods-style guided research project to express, purify, quantify, and analyze a medically-relevant protein from a cell-based expression system.

PCB 3063L Genetics Lab

Covers Mendelian inheritance and molecular genetics through the use of guided inquiry laboratory activities and a hypothesis-driven guided research project using Drosophila melanogaster as a research model organism.

BSC 4933 Learning Assistant in Genetics

Students that have successfully completed the genetics lab course can serve as peer learning assistants in the lab and complete a pedagogy teaching theory course through the Center for Innovative Teaching & Learning.

PCB 4522C Experimental Genetics & Cell Biology Lecture and Lab

Provides instruction on advanced research laboratory skills, including molecular biology techniques, research project development, laboratory protocol writing, presentation of primary literature, and peer review of scientific writing.

  • Provides IDS 4914 Advanced Undergraduate Research Experience

PCB 4024 Molecular Biology of the Cell

  • Provides IDS 4914 Advanced Undergraduate Research Experience through completion of a group research proposal project
