Bio
Dr. Arturo Jimenez-Bacardi’s work crosses international borders. His teaching and research interests intersect the fields of international relations, international law, global governance and foreign policy with a focus on the tension between security and human rights.
Through his research, Jimenez-Bacardi examines how the domestic institutionalization of international law into the United States’ national security system affected its use of torture during the Vietnam War and the War on Terrorism. Jimenez-Bacardi’s is working on a book, Speaking Law to War, in which he explores whether, why and how states comply with their international obligations during times of great threat. He has written numerous peer-reviewed articles appearing in journals such as the European Journal of International Relations and the Journal of Human Rights.
Jimenez-Bacardi teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in introduction to international affairs, international law, American forgein policy, conflict in the world and the United States intelligence community. He has received numerous grants and awards, including the Center for Global Peace and Conflict Studies Graduate Student Research Grant and the Kugelman Citizen Peacebuilding Research Fellowship. Prior to joining USF St. Petersburg, Jimenez-Bacardi served as a Research Affiliate at the National Security Archive.
