Bio
Dr. Jody McBrien has taught at USF since 2005. Highly interdisciplinary, she has taught courses for the College of Education (Comparative and International Education, social foundations courses), Interdisciplinary Social Sciences (Human Migration, International Human Rights), and the Honors College (Honors Seminar and independent study). She has also guest taught at Shortwood Teachers College in Kingston, Jamaica; the University of Winnipeg, Canada; and Soka University, Tokyo, Japan.
Jody has over 50 scholarly publications. Her 2019 book, Educational Policies and Practices of English-Speaking Refugee Resettlement Countries (Brill/Sense) brought together 21 scholars to write about this work from the perspectives of seven countries. In 2005 she published a seminal article in the Review of Educational Research, “Educational Needs and Barriers for Refugee Students in the United States,” that continues to be cited weekly.
Jody’s primary research describes international and comparative issues of refugee students and their families, work which she has conducted in North America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Australasia. In 2021-2022, she was a Council on Foreign Relations Tenured Professor Fellow at the OECD in Paris. She also received a 2014 Ian Axford (New Zealand) Fellowship in Public Policy to examine how policies in New Zealand affected refugee resettlement; and a 2019 Fulbright Specialist Award to review practices at the rebuilt Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre in Auckland, NZ.
