USF graduate jazz studies student Adolfo Mendonça taught four masterclasses in the Brazilian cities of Sao Paulo, Cubatao, and Guarulhos in October.
Mendonça’s class, titled “Jazz Language and Teaching,” taught the differences between Brazilian music and jazz language, the tradition of improvisation in American music, and Medonca’s personal thoughts on American and Brazilian teaching.
Mendonça also incorporated concepts of form and harmony, differences between popular music and classical music, and accents and articulation in jazz into the classes.
Schools that hosted for Mendonça for his masterclass tour included Faculdade Souza Lima, ETMD Ivanildo Rebouças, Faculdade Santa Marcelina, and the City Conservatory of Guarulhos.
