TheatreUSF 2019 British International Theatre Production. By Jane Austen, Adaptation by John Webber, Directed by Eduard Lewis (Antigone, 2017).

Emma, by Jane Austen, is about the perils of misconstrued romance. Socialite Emma Woodhouse entertains herself by playing matchmaker for those around her. However, she overestimates her matchmaking abilities and underestimates the dangers of meddling in other people’s lives.

In this new adaptation, college students deconstruct and engage lively debate over Emma's storyline - social mores and class conflicts come alive - as the characters from the novel play the scenes out on stage.

Two women sitting and cross stitching on a couch, one looking over curiously at what the other is doing.
Three women sitting in a circle facing each other, talking excitedly. Two men stand with them, looking on.
A woman yells at a man, as other people in the background watch them.
Five people holding up letters, from left to right: B, N, D, E, R, L, U.
A smiling woman holds a baby, two men stand with her, one of each side.
