TAMPA – University of South Florida Muma College of Business professor Sunil Mithas was named a 2023 Fellow of the Association for Information Systems, one of the highest
honors recognizing leaders in the field of information systems.
The AIS Fellow Award is given to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the discipline
in terms of research, teaching and service, as well as significant global and local
contributions in their region.
Mithas is a professor and USF World Class Scholar in the School of Information Systems and Management within the Muma College of Business, where he also serves as director of rankings
and reputation.
“It is an overwhelming feeling to be recognized as one of the Fellows because the
past winners, and my fellow recipients this year, are some of the most respected,
influential and iconic scholars in our field,” he said. “Many of them inspire and
shape my work.”
Mithas was among 11 scholars selected for the 2023 AIS Fellow Award, which he accepted
on Dec. 11 at the 2023 International Conference on Information Systems held in Hyderabad,
India. The conference brings together information systems researchers from around
the world to discuss cutting-edge research.
This past year brought multiple professional accolades for Mithas, who ranks among
the world’s foremost researchers across business disciplines and information systems
schools.
In 2022, Mithas received the INFORMS Information Systems Society Distinguished Fellow Award.
“Being recognized by two of the most important research communities and associations
in successive years is gratifying. I hope I can continue to feel like being a student
forever and live up to the expectations of those who bestow such awards,” he said.
In September 2023, he received a USF Faculty Outstanding Research Achievement Award for contributing to new research on sustainability, innovation, strategies and governance
for organization transformation.
He is the author of two books, and his research has been published in top journals
and conferences and recognized with multiple best-paper awards. His work also has
been featured in practice-oriented publications such as the MIT Sloan Management Review, Management Business Review, and Bloomberg.
“My research is fairly interdisciplinary, so it is not always easy to publish such
research,” he said. “I am proud of having the opportunity to work with an amazing
set of coauthors over the years, and to have the support from many skilled reviewers
and editors to enable contributions that speak to important academic puzzles and managerial
dilemmas.”
Outside of USF, Mithas serves as a senior editor of MIS Quarterly and department editor of Production and Operations Management, and an editorial board member at the Journal of Management Information Systems. Earlier he served on the editorial board of Information Systems Research, and IEEE IT Professional.
He has consulted and conducted research with a range of organizations including A.
T. Kearney, EY, Johnson & Johnson, the Social Security Administration, U.S. Census
Bureau, and the Tata Group.
He is a frequent keynote speaker in corporate and academic settings. Mithas had a
decade-long successful career in the corporate world with the Tata Group in engineering,
marketing, and general management positions before he dedicated himself to an academic
career.
He earned his PhD from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan,
a business degree from MDI Gurgaon, and an engineering degree from IIT, Roorkee.
