In today’s rapidly evolving job market, continuous learning is no longer optional – it’s essential.
As the demand for continuous learning surges in today’s fast-paced job market, the University of South Florida is leading the way with innovative educational solutions. With 80% of employers planning to seek out online learning programs to upskill their workforce, according to the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, the need for flexible, targeted education has never been greater.
Yet, as demand grows, consumer behavior is evolving. Adult and corporate learners are increasingly prioritizing programs that can be seamlessly integrated with their career and family commitments. Through its Corporate Training and Professional Education programs, USF is not just adapting to these changes – it’s leading the charge. By offering a wide range of flexible learning options, USF’s programs are helping professionals and organizations to thrive in an ever-evolving workforce.
“While traditional four-year degrees offer a solid foundation for launching careers, short-form educational opportunities have gained significant traction in recent years. These programs provide specialized skill development that aligns with the specific needs of the modern job market,” said Mark Koulianos, the assistant vice president of USF’s Lifelong Learning unit, which houses the Corporate Training and Professional Education team.
As the educational landscape evolves, Koulianos says different types of non-credit learning opportunities have become essential in supporting individuals at every point in their careers.
“Whether professionals are just beginning their career journey or seeking a change, these programs provide pathways to enhance skills and achieve career aspirations,” he said.
BRIDGING THE SKILLS GAP
The AACSB references a recent report from CarringtonCrisp, a consultancy specializing in business education, which highlights many aspects of the future of lifelong learning. The report found the top five reasons learners intend to pursue further education are to: 1) Improve earning potential, 2) Learn specific skills, 3) Update or refresh current skill sets, 4) Quickly acquire new knowledge, and 5) Improve overall employability.
Higher education institutions play a crucial role in developing alternative learning opportunities. Universities often collaborate in continuing education, as seen with USF’s Corporate Training and Professional Education, which offers programs ranging from online certificates and exam preparation to in-person training and workshops. These resources guide professionals across various industries to reach their full potential and enhance their career prospects.
“Continuing education beyond a traditional degree is more crucial than ever in today’s workforce,” said Koulianos. “Lifelong learning is the key to thriving in a dynamic job market, and CTPE is committed to helping professionals achieve their unique career goals.”
FLEXIBLE LEARNING OPTIONS
Flexibility is essential for today's working professionals, who juggle the increasing demands of jobs, families, and personal lives. The report found that while 38% of respondents preferred in-person learning, a significant 50% favored online learning programs, whether synchronous with scheduled sessions or offered in a format that lets learners access content whenever and wherever they choose.
To meet these diverse needs, USF offers over 40 online learning programs through its Corporate Training and Professional Education team, as well as a variety of face-to-face and hybrid options. These programs are designed to fit seamlessly into the busy lives of working professionals, enabling them to acquire new skills and certifications without disrupting their careers or family responsibilities.
Popular programs include preparation courses for industry-recognized certifications such as PMP (Project Management Professional), SHRM-CP (Society for Human Resource Management Certified Professional), and other credentials that are highly valued in today’s job market. In addition, USF’s offerings in areas like artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital marketing ensure that professionals are equipped with the most relevant and in-demand skills.
EXCITING PROSPECTS ON THE HORIZON
“While the future of lifelong learning continues to unfold, USF’s Office of Corporate Training and Professional Education remains a solid resource for professionals,” said Koulianos. “USF has developed a suite of programs that are not only flexible but also designed to meet the precise – yet evolving – needs of today’s professionals and their shifting learning preferences.”
