The Suncoast Area Teacher Training (SCATT)/Leaders for Education program started the 2023-2024 academic year with a powerful and motivating kick-off meeting at the University of South Florida Tampa campus. College of Education students gathered to learn more about SCATT, an enrichment program aimed at equipping them with the skills and leadership qualities necessary to excel in the teaching profession.

The highlight of the event was a stirring speech by Mr. Rennex Franklin, a distinguished alumnus of both the USF College of Education and the SCATT program. Currently serving as the Supervisor of Elementary Counseling Services for Hillsborough County Public Schools, Mr. Franklin's address set the tone for an inspiring and purpose-driven academic year.
Mr. Franklin's speech revolved around the theme of making a difference in the lives of students. He shared personal anecdotes and insights into the teaching profession, emphasizing the profound impact educators can have on shaping young minds. "Being a teacher is about more than just imparting knowledge; it's about being a difference-maker," Franklin said.
In addition to stressing the significance of their role, Mr. Franklin also reminded the SCATT participants of the importance of self-care. Recognizing the demanding nature of the teaching profession, he underscored the need for educators to prioritize their physical and emotional well-being to ensure they can give their best to their students.
One of the memorable moments of the meeting was when Mr. Franklin introduced the SCATT clap. This spirited group clap, designed to celebrate achievements and foster a sense of community, left an indelible mark on the participants.
