Alexandra Panos, Ph.D., Receives Grant to Explore Climate Literacy Teaching for English Language Arts Educators
Alexandra Panos, Ph.D., assistant professor of literacy studies and director of research for the Center for Climate Literacy at the USF College of Education was awarded a $50,000 Spencer Foundation Small Research Grant, along with Co-PIs Michael Sherry, Ph.D., associate professor in English Education and Jarod Roselló, Ph.D., associate professor in Creative Writing.

RISE Caribbean initiative celebrates Year 1 of project, prepares for expanded research collaborations in the future
Research Initiative for Supporting Education (RISE) is a project that launched a new interdisciplinary educational research center, Caribbean Educational Research Center (CERC) to support education policy development and timely decision-making on issues impacting schools in the Caribbean. Faculty from USF and UWI collaborate on professional development activities, research design and building a cross-cultural mentorship network.

Research shows importance of providing multicultural books that reflect children’s identity during the pandemic
When the pandemic began and schools moved to remote learning, many parents and caregivers were afraid their children would fall behind academically and socially. Responding to those concerns led College of Education professors AnnMarie Gunn and Susan Bennett to team up with the Police Athletic League (PAL) of St. Petersburg, which seeks to inspire hope and transform the lives of at-risk youth.

Alumni Spotlight: Mellissa Alonso-Teston
Since graduating, USF alumna Mellissa Alonso-Teston began teaching and advanced into a district position in 1996 that enabled her to author and lead Hillsborough County Public Schools' Reading Coach Project. In 2017, Alonso-Teston’s desire to become an education researcher motivated her to pursue a PhD in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Literacy Studies at USF.
