A team of undergraduate students from the University of South Florida’s Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering won first place in the FWEA (Florida Water Environment Association) Student Design Competition. The USF team members are Adele Howard, Daniela Montoya, Fabricio Escobar, and Olta Tarko.
For their project, the students partnered with the city of St. Petersburg to develop a solution that would alleviate flooding while also avoiding adverse water quality in Dell Holmes Park, a public attraction owned and operated by the city. The site borders Lake Maggiore and suffers from severe flooding during both mild and major storm events, limiting visitor accessibility.
The FWEA Student Design Competition is intended to promote “real world” design experience for students interested in pursuing an education water engineering and sciences. This competition tasks student teams to design and present a solution for a real world problem. Student teams from around Florida compete in the competition at the Florida Water Resources Conference’s annual program. The USF team will move on and compete at a national competition at the Water Environment Federation’s Technical Exposition and Conference in Chicago (September 30).
