As a Senior Research Fellow at GNSI, I conduct policy relevant research in the areas of intelligence, grand strategy, and national security. I am also developing GNSI’s Future Strategist Program, which aims to prepare USF undergraduate and graduate students for careers in national security related fields. My research in American intelligence history has made me a big believer in educating more informed citizens who will have to find new ways to balance liberty and security in our republic in response to the challenges of the 21st century.

Prior to GNSI:  I was an assistant professor at the Joint Special Operations University in Tampa, FL and The Citadel in Charleston, SC. I was also previously a postdoctoral fellow in the National Security Affairs Department at the U.S. Naval War College. I currently sit on the boards of the International Journal of Intelligence and CounterIntelligence and the Society for Intelligence History. I am currently revising my book, The Spy and the State: The History of American Intelligence, forthcoming with Oxford University Press in spring 2025.

Get to Know Your GNSI Team

Flashback to 10 years old: What did you want to be when you grew up?
A fisherman, soldier, or lawyer. I was lucky to serve in the military after law school, so I got some experience in each, but fishing is what stuck.

What's the most "interesting" thing you've done that not many people know about?
I ran a 50 mile ultra marathon a few months after my fourth knee surgery with my roommate at the time who also needed a knee surgery. I could barely walk for the next three days but then somehow PR’d my 5K in Boston the following weekend.

Favorite musician, genre of music?
I have wide-ranging music tastes…everything 90s, alternative, rock, rap, country, and even opera (favorite is Carmen).

Where are you from originally? What was your first job?
Tampa, FL, home of USF and GNSI! For my first job, I was a wine steward at the legendary Bern’s Steak House.

Books you're currently reading?
Still chipping away at Fred Anderson’s Crucible of War, which is foundational to understanding the American Revolution and a great study in grand strategy and alliance politics. Next up is Rick Atkinson’s The British Are Coming. Recently enjoyed John Lewis Gaddis’ On Grand Strategy and The Landscape of History.

Favorite sport, team, athlete or "thing" you could be President of the Fan Club?
I played rugby in college (union and league) and still like to watch games when they are available in the US and the time difference isn’t too painful. Support Mate Ma’a Tonga in the RLWC. I also like to keep up with Fletch and Hindy on The Late Show with Matty Johns.

Finish this sentence: On Sunday mornings, you can usually find me...
Out on the water fishing or spearfishing, or cleaning the boat and fish from the day before.

When's your birthday?
February 27
