The Psychology Department graduate major is divided into three broad concentrations: Clinical, Cognition, Neuroscience, & Social Psychology, and Industrial-Organizational. Each of these areas offers Ph.D. level training in the following areas of special expertise:

Clinical –

Psychopathology (Mood, Anxiety, Eating, Schizophrenia and Personality), Psychological Assessment and Interventions, Health Psychology, Addictive Behaviors, Clinical Child Psychology.

Cognition, Neuroscience, & Social Psychology -
Behavioral Neuroscience, Cognition, Judgment and Decision Making, Development, Memory, Perception, Social. In addition, with faculty in Communication Sciences and Disorders, the CNS faculty offers a specialization in Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences.

Industrial-Organizational -
Staffing, Measurement & Personnel Testing, Learning, Training & Development, Motivation & Job Attitudes, Teams & Multilevel Organizational Systems, Leadership, Career Development, Work-Family, Occupational Health Psychology, Future of Work.

Methodological offerings across areas include Regression, Analysis of Variance, Psychometrics, Factor Analysis, Meta-analysis, and Structural Equation Modeling.

Accreditation:
Clinical Program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and the Psychological Clinical Sciences Accreditation System, and is a member of the Academy of Psychological Clinical Science.

Admission Information

Must meet University Admission and English Proficiency requirements as well as requirements for admission to the major, listed below. See Psychology Admissions webpage for additional details.

Three letters of recommendation.
GRE recommended (see Psychology Admissions website for more information.
A GPA Worksheet (https://www.usf.edu/arts-sciences/departments/psychology/documents/gpa-worksheet.pdf) with an upper-level undergraduate GPA of 3.40 or better.

Curriculum Requirements

Post-Bachelor’s - Total Minimum Hours: 80 hours

Students must successfully complete all requirements noted in the Catalog section for the M.A. in Psychology, or its equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 3.00. In addition, students must successfully complete the post-master’s requirements listed below. The 30 hours minimum from the master’s degree is then added to the post-master’s minimum of 50 hours for the 80 hour total.

•   Master’s requirements – 30 Credit hours
•   Doctoral Concentration – 18 Credit hours minimum
•   Tools Requirement – 6 Credit Hours Minimum
•   Electives – 11 Credit Hours Minimum
•   Dissertation – 12 Credit hours minimum
•   Remaining hours completed in the Concentration to meet minimum hours required – 3 credit hours minimum

Post-Master’s – Total Minimum Hours: 50 hours

Individual concentrations may require more hours for accreditation. A minimum GPA of 3.00 is required for all courses within the Ph.D. Degree

•   Core – 7 credit hours (Completed as part of the post-bachelor’s requirements – not counted in total minimum post-Master’s hours)

Tools of Research:

Students complete tools of research in the area of the concentration, selected in consultation with and approval from the Major Professor. These requirements are in addition to any Master’s requirements.

Students in the Clinical Psychology Concentration and the Cognition, Neuroscience, and Social Psychology Concentration are required to complete nine (9) credit hours minimum. Students may choose from the list of approved courses below. Students wishing to fulfill this methods requirement with any course not listed here must submit a request to their major professor.

Students complete a minimum of eleven hours in their concentration area from the following, or acceptable alternatives, selected in consultation with the Major Professor.

The Clinical Psychology Concentration requires a clinical specialization set of four (4) electives (12 credit hours minimum) with at least three (3) selected from the courses below. The fourth course, if not taken from the list below, must receive prior approval through a petition of the Clinical Psychology Concentration faculty, but may include a course outside of the concentration or an additional methods/quantitative course.

The Cognition, Neuroscience, and Social Psychology Concentration and the Industrial-Organizational Psychology Concentration require a minimum of eleven hours from the following, or acceptable alternatives, selected in consultation with the major professor:

Internship

Students in the Clinical Psychology Concentration are required to complete a one-year, full-time, APA-approved (or CPA approved) internship (designated as IDS 6940 Cooperative Internship or PSY 6946 Practicum and Internship in Clinical Psychology) in a training facility approved by the Department

Qualifying Examination:

Successful completion of the Ph.D. Comprehensive Qualifying Exam (CL, CNS, IO) or major area paper (CL, CNS) is required for Admission to Candidacy

Dissertation: (12 Credit Hours Minimum)

PSY 7980 Dissertation: Doctoral Credit Hours: 2-19 (12 credits minimum for this program)
