MCOM establishes new scholarship

Christina Holmes

The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine Office of Student Diversity and Enrichment announced the new Christina Holmes Community Champion Scholarship during the Pre-health Scholars Program (PSP) 20th Anniversary Celebration Sept. 27.  The scholarship will help offset tuition costs for PSP students who matriculate into one of the USF Health colleges or schools.

Christina Holmes was a first-generation college graduate from Dade City, Fla. After high school, she spent the 25 years dedicating her life to the USF Area Health Education Center mission.  She started as an office assistant at the Gulfcoast North Area Health Education Center in Land O’Lakes, Fla.  Her knowledge and passion for community contributed to her rise through the ranks to eventually become the organization’s chief executive officer in 2009.  She was elected president of the National AHEC Organization Board of Directors in 2019.

Christina Holmes died in February 2022 from complications with COVID-19 while simultaneously battling breast cancer.  Her memory lives on in a scholarship that helps create pathways for future health care professionals.
