Celebrating CRNA Week and the trailblazing nurses leading the way

There are nearly 74,000 Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) across the nation, and each January, we proudly recognize their invaluable contributions to healthcare.

The USF Health College of Nursing is proud to be home to Florida’s #1-ranked CRNA program and the #36 program in the nation, as recognized by U.S. News & World Report in 2025.

The USF Health CRNA Program has established an Advanced Pain Management Fellowship, one of only two programs nationwide that provide CRNAs with specialized training in chronic pain management. Among the many outstanding CRNAs serving this stellar program are two nursing trailblazers: Keith Barnhill, PhD, CRNA, and Lisa Pearson, DNAP, CRNA. Each contributing to pain management and education, leaving a lasting impact through their leadership in our Advanced Pain Management Fellowship program.

Keith Barnhill, PhD, CRNA

Keith Barnhill, PhD, CRNA is well-known for his advanced expertise in pain management. As a practitioner, he has demonstrated a profound commitment to alleviating patient pain and improving quality of life through innovative approaches. His role as adjunct faculty at USF exemplifies his dedication to shaping the future of nursing.

“The most rewarding aspect is watching CRNAs acquire rural pain practices, establishing clinics to address pain in underserved communities, or even their own communities,” shared Barnhill. “There are over 100 million Americans suffering from chronic pain, and these clinics provide a lifeline.”

Barnhill trains fellows in the intricacies of pain management, offering hands-on clinical instruction and delivering lectures that combine evidence-based practice with real-world application.

“Fellows not only learn pain management, but also how to collaborate with other healthcare providers,” said Barnhill. “The learning doesn’t end at graduation; it continues to evolve and expand as they advance in their careers.”

His mentorship has empowered countless CRNA fellows to pursue excellence in their practice, cementing his reputation as a leader in both patient care and education—something Barnhill highlights when encouraging future and current CRNAs to find a mentor who can guide them along the way.

Lisa Pearson, DNAP, CRNA

Lisa Pearson, DNAP, CRNA, sets a high standard for patient care through her clinical expertise and compassionate approach to pain management. As the first CRNA to open an independent pain clinic in her state, she has inspired others to follow suit. Celebrated for her commitment to advancing independent practice and advocating for CRNA rights, Pearson's resilience shone through her fight against Medicare’s initial refusal to reimburse CRNAs for chronic pain management services. Pearson partnered with the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists (AANA), state boards, and legislators to secure recognition and reimbursement for CRNAs, a victory that changed the landscape of the profession.

“I believe my legacy lies in keeping pain management accessible to CRNAs nationwide and establishing independent practices as a viable path,” explained Pearson.

As adjunct faculty at USF, Pearson plays a vital role in the Advanced Pain Management Fellowship program. She leads the Pharmacology of Pain Management course, serves as an advisor and instructor for the annual cadaver course, and acts as a clinical preceptor for pain fellows. Through her mentorship and clinical training sessions, she equips fellows with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the complex landscape of pain management. Her lectures are a source of inspiration, blending clinical insights with a passion for nursing education.

“USF Advanced Pain Management Fellowship is set apart by its exceptional faculty and staff,” emphasized Pearson. “You’re learning from the best, receiving top-notch clinical and didactic training which provides a strong foundation.”

Together, Barnhill and Pearson have elevated USF's Advanced Pain Management Fellowship through their leadership and dedication to advancing nursing excellence. Their impact extends beyond the clinical setting, shaping future CRNAs with both technical expertise and compassionate care. As we celebrate CRNA Week, we honor their trailblazing commitment to their patients, the profession and the future of nursing.
