Learning Design Showcase
IDS 6221 - Sustainability Design Lab
In the first video introduction for his Sustainability Design lab course, Dr. T.H. Culhane invites learners to envision new possibilities for how sustainability practices can address challenges and improve the world. Designed to engage students from the start, the video encourages them to consider how communication and technology can be jointly used to bring ideas to life.
This video was a collaboration between the design and media team in producing it, integrating pedagogical expertise, creativity, and multimedia production to deliver an impactful and dynamic learning experience. To reinforce this key message for the course, Dr. Culhane creatively reworked the lyrics to “Imagination” and appears as Willy Wonka, urging students to use immersive media to convey idealized "worlds of their own creation." This engaging approach inspires learners to view the upcoming material with fresh curiosity and sparks their creativity as they delve further into the course.
Digital Learning Designer Tips
"When planning highly creative videos, consider how visuals and words can be used in harmony to reinforce messaging. It would have been very easy to tell students “throughout this course, you will learn how to create media that will help you visualize your ideas to audiences”, but by applying the creative twist of being Willy Wonka bringing imagined worlds to life, Dr. Culhane was able to visually model the use of creative storytelling through media to the learners in his course."
