Celebrating Cybersecurity Awareness Month

October is Cybersecurity Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about cybersecurity threats and promoting safe online practices. In today’s interconnected world, cybersecurity is more critical than ever. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their tactics and targeting unsuspecting individuals.

Throughout the month, USF Information Technology will be sharing important tips on how to stay safe online and we will also be participating in several events. By raising awareness about cybersecurity, we can help prevent cyberattacks, protect personal information, and safeguard sensitive data.

Each week, USF IT will be focusing on a different theme via social media to promote resources and advice on cybersecurity best practices. This year’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month focuses on four core themes:

  • Strong Passwords: Use unique, complex passwords for each online account and consider using a password manager to securely store them.
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA): Enable MFA whenever possible to add an extra layer of security to your accounts.
  • Phishing Awareness: Be cautious of suspicious emails, messages, or phone calls asking for personal information. Avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading attachments from untrusted sources.
  • Software Updates: Keep your operating system, applications, and antivirus software up to date to protect against known vulnerabilities.

Throughout October, USF IT will also be participating in a few events:

  • Dog Days: Come pet cute therapy dogs while learning more about resources IT can provide. We will be there on Tuesday, October 17 from 11:45 AM – 1:15 PM.
  • Cyber Bowl: Join us for an online competition against nine other Florida universities to answer questions about cybersecurity. Let’s make USF the cybersecurity champion! The event starts October 9.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is an opportunity for our university community to come together and prioritize online safety. By following best practices and staying informed, we can create a secure digital environment for everyone.
