The Remote Sensing and Satellite Imagery welcomed the campers as new scientists into the field of remote sensing! This lab helps the campers understand how satellite data can be used to research the ocean.

Under the direction of newly inaugurated Dr. Maria, the girls were introduced to the fundamental ideas of the electromagnetic spectrum and how light of differing wavelengths can be measured and applied to ocean science. After talking with several scientific researchers here at the College of Marine Science, our scientists in training were able to pose a question to be solved using satellite imagery and the scientific method.

The second day of lab was spent extracting data from a NASA database which allowed the campers to analyze Chlorophyll-A concentrations and sea surface temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico. The girls were able to produce time series graphs of their results as a final product and presented their findings on the final day of camp!
