The Jackson Rooming House Remembered and Re-envisioned
The Jackson Rooming House was once a haven for black entertainers, athletes, teachers, clergymen, and visitors to Tampa, Florida. Located a block west of Tampa Union Station along Nebraska Avenue at 835 Zack Street — currently 851 East Zack St. — it is just a short walk east of the once-thriving Central Avenue business and entertainment district that was prominent during the era of Jim Crow racial segregation.

USF epidemiologists analyze the prevalence of COVID-19 variants in Tampa Bay
Researchers in the USF College of Public Health are conducting genomic sequencing of positive pooled samples to determine the prevalence of COVID-19 variants in Tampa Bay. This data will be utilized to project how emergent variants could influence the course of the pandemic.

$1 million gift to USF will advance lung research
The University of South Florida has received a $1 million gift to fund research to detect and prevent severe lung scarring. Philanthropist Timothy Ubben made the gift to support research led by his doctor, Jose D. Herazo-Maya, USF Health’s newly appointed associate chief of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine.

Traffic reductions due to COVID-19 boost air quality in some states but not all
Dramatic decreases in traffic caused by COVID-19 shutdowns improved air quality in car-dependent states but didn’t offset additional forms of pollution in other parts of the country. Those findings by a University of South Florida researcher suggest that while decreasing the number of vehicles on the road is a good first step toward creating cleaner air, additional measures aimed at reducing other sources of air pollution, such as coal plants or industrial factories, must also be considered.
