USF professor: Statin use not justified for healthy people with high cholesterol

New research from David Diamond, a neuroscientist and cardiovascular disease researcher in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Florida showed LDL alone has “a very weak association” with heart disease and stroke. Their review went further, showing that when people with high LDL and optimal triglycerides and HDL were given a statin, there was no benefit.

As one of four data generation projects funded by NIH’s Bridge2AI, this multi-institution project – co-led by the University of South Florida and Weill Cornell Medicine – will bring together medical, voice, AI, engineering, and ethics experts to create a human voice database using privacy-preserving AI, giving doctors a new tool for diagnosing conditions known to have associations with voice alterations.

A legislative panel Friday approved money for more than 230 local projects and programs across the state. Among the approved spending items was $15 million to build a facility to house the Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and Innovation program at USF St. Petersburg.
