USF professor discovers new species while part of team studying impact of oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico
Heather Judkins, associate professor of integrative biology on the USF St. Petersburg campus, will continue her studies of cephalopods, such as octopus and squid, as part of a team of scientists aboard the R/V Point Sur for a 12-day research cruise around the Gulf of Mexico. The goal of the cruise is to identify and quantify long-term trends in fishes, crustaceans and cephalopods in the midwaters of the Gulf in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill that occurred in 2010.

NASA TechLeap Winners Advance Technology to Aid Lunar Landings
The USF Institute of Applied Engineering is one of three winners in the NASA TechLeap Prize competition. Winners are awarded an initial $200,000 prize to help mature their technology, with the opportunity for each to win up to a total of $650,000 in prizes as well as a suborbital flight test on a commercial rocket-powered landing vehicle.

USF anthropologists to assist deputies in search for human remains at Palm Coast site
Skeletal bones were found at a partially-built residential development in Palm Coast, Florida. The USF team plans to use ground-penetrating radar at the construction site, which will speed up the search for human remains.

Two EE Faculty Receive Patent and NSF Grant for Wearable Technology
Department of Electrical Engineering Associate Professor Arash Takshi and USF Research & Innovation Interim Vice President Dr. Sylvia Wilson Thomas are using a novel electrochemical method to print copper directly on fabric. With a $369,574 grant from the National Science Foundation, the project is taking wearable electronics to a whole other level.

PACT (Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training) is a five-year clinical trial to investigate the effectiveness of cognitive training or brain games on the computer to delay cognitive decline in hopes that they prevent dementia.

This summer's Sargassum already has set a record. Combined, the total amount of the weed increased from 18.8 million tons in May 2022 to 24.2 million tons in June 2022, setting a new historical record, according to the University of South Florida scientists July 2 bulletin on the algae.

Researchers have released results from a statewide survey aimed at measuring public opinion on a variety of current policy issues. The findings address the recent Supreme Court ruling on abortion, the economy, gun violence/reform and presidential/gubernatorial job approval.
