USF alumni win nationwide competition with innovative ventilator prototype
A group of USF alumni won $20,000 in a national competition for the creation of a low-cost ventilator prototype. Biomedical engineering alumni Abby Blocker, Carolyna Yamamoto Alves Pinto and Jacob Yarinsky created Eucovent, a device resembling a small box that splits the airflow from one ventilator to two patients (USF Oracle).

USF Health researcher studies gut microbiome to improve brain health, decrease age-related diseases
Dr. Hariom Yadav, an associate professor of neurosurgery and brain repair, was recruited to the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine to direct the Center for Microbiome Research. When he joined USF Health, he brought more than $4 million in research awards from the National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Department of Defense.

USF Health a clinical trial testing site for Moderna COVID-19 vaccine for younger children
The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine has been selected as a site for a clinical trial testing the Moderna mRNA-1273 COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to less than 11 years.
USF enrolling Bay Area children as part of Moderna vaccine study
The University of South Florida says Moderna is testing efficacy, side effects and dosage; 12,000 children will be enrolled nationwide. One-quarter of them will get a placebo of saline and have their results compared with those who got the real thing (Fox 13).
USF Health joins national study testing how well COVID-19 vaccine prevents spread of SARS-CoV-2 in young adults
The USF Health Morsani College of Medicine has begun enrolling university students and other young adults, including those not planning to be vaccinated, for an expanded nationwide study evaluating coronavirus infection and transmission in people ages 18 through 29.
How do researchers know it's the delta variant?
The COVID-19 delta variant is by far the most dominant variant circulating right now in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Scientists determine the prevalence of a particular variant through genomics testing and DNA sequencing but according to Dr. Jill Roberts, a molecular epidemiologist at the University of South Florida, the U.S. is only running genomics on about 10 percent of positive cases (WTSP-TV).
Florida may face its worst wave ever as the Delta variant spreads
The state is about a month away from its peak, according to an epidemiologist who tracks the virus there. “Short term and long term, the cases are going to explode,” Edwin Michael, a professor of epidemiology at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, said in an interview. “We are predicting that the cases will be peaking the first week of September” (New York Times).
