Meet seven inventors who have made Florida a ‘powerhouse of innovation’
The inventor of the Segway and a co-inventor of technology that revolutionized modern day computing are among the seven newest inductees in the Florida Inventors Hall of Fame. The 2021 class also includes Norma A. Alcantar, an engineering professor at University of South Florida who has pioneered advances to decontaminate water and develop biomedical solutions for acute diseases (St. Pete Catalyst).

New research shows long-term recovery possible for areas impacted by seagrass die-off
Nearly 10,000 acres of lush seagrass vanished from Florida Bay between 1987 and 1991, leading to massive ecological changes in the region near the Florida Keys. Abundance of the seagrass, Thalassia testudinum, more commonly known as turtlegrass, a foundation species of the Florida Bay ecosystem, decreased extensively during what is considered to be one of the largest declines in seagrass cover in recent history (USF Newsroom).

The University of South Florida is seeking local participants in a study to measure the effects of “brain games” on delaying mental decline. The university recently received a $44.4 million federal grant to continue its Preventing Alzheimer’s with Cognitive Training (PACT) study (The Ledger).
