Plans of Study
This degree will prepare students to engage in educational settings but not limited to settings such as museums, non-profit organizations, community based organizations and businesses where teaching and training are an integral part of the organization.
All majors will be assigned to a specified sequence of courses to be followed throughout the program enrollment. Coursework will include internships and field experience. Field experiences usually begin during the second semester of student’s enrollment with increasing involvement throughout the program.
The current program of study includes both coursework and extensive field experience in elementary, middle, secondary or other appropriate educational settings to enable students to integrate theory with teaching practice.

Graduation Requirements - Educational Studies B.S.
To be certified by the College of Education for graduation, a student must have:
- Earned a minimum of 120-semester hours credit.
- Successfully completed all program requirements for the degree in Educational Studies.
- A minimum overall USF grade-point average of 2.50 or a minimum GPA of 2.50 in teaching specialization courses and a minimum GPA of 2.50 in the Professional Education sequence Satisfactory completion of the final internship.
- Successful completion of the major requirements of the Educational Studies degree (which includes general preparation, teaching specialization, and professional preparation). A minimum of 8 credits in professional courses in addition to internship and 12 credits in specialization courses must have been earned at USF. A minimum of 30 hours after admittance to a Bachelor’s of Science Educational Studies program and meet all University requirements.
State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites - Educational Studies B.S.
Following Florida BOG Regulation 8.010, state mandated common course prerequisites are lower-division courses that are required for progression into the upper division of a particular baccalaureate degree program.
Transfer students should complete the State Mandated Common Course Prerequisites at the lower level prior to entering the university. If these courses are not taken at a Florida College System institution, they must be completed before the degree is granted. Successful completion of the common prerequisites alone does not guarantee a student admission into the degree program.
Unless stated otherwise, a grade of C- is the minimum acceptable grade in prerequisite courses.

Required Supporting Course: 1 course; 3 credit hours
The following course is a supporting courses for this major. The degree will not be awarded if this course has not been taken by the end of the student’s final semester.

GPA Requirements
An overall minimum GPA of 2.50 on all attempted hours. Students must have an overall USF GPA of 2.5 and a GPA of 2.5 in the combined Professional Core and Teaching Specialization prior to final internship and graduation.
Grading Requirements
Students must earn a grade of C- or higher in all required courses to progress to the following semester or they may be dismissed and/or required to meet with departmental Professional Standards Committee.
Residency Requirements

Time Limit for Coursework - College of Education
The College of Education reserves the right to determine whether courses five years or older can be applied toward a degree based on the following guidelines:
- Courses completed within the last five years may be accepted toward graduation.
- Courses completed over five years but less than ten years ago must have the approval of the chairperson from the department in which the equivalent course is taught.
- Courses completed ten years ago or longer will count as elective credit only toward graduation.

Please be advised that program and/or course requirements are subject to change, per state legislative mandates, Florida State Department of Education program approval standards, and accreditation criteria.
Students will be required to pay for costs in addition to tuition, fees, and books such as:
- Transportation to and from school sites required in courses and internships
- Criminal background checks and fingerprinting for internships
- Assignments in some classes (e.g., printing/binding of group project reports, academic and professional portfolio, digital recording equipment, etc.)
- Part-time students in Education (those planning to take 9 hours or fewer per semester) must meet program and internship requirements associated with the program. These requirements include being available to participate in the internships during regular school or business hours.
Because of state and national accreditation requirements, students who take any of the required professional education core courses or education specialization courses at institutions accredited by either the Higher Learning Commission, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, the New England Commission of Higher Education, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges, or the WASC Senior College and University Commission may be required to submit additional assignments to meet graduation requirements for the USF College of Education.
Internship Experience - Educational Studies B.S.
Qualifications for Internship Experience
The final internship experience involves observing and teaching both in educational setting but not limited to settings such as museums, non-profit organizations, community-based organizations and businesses. Internship sites include the entire spectrum of educational settings available in the community served by USF St. Petersburg campus. Other than Final Internship Seminar, students may not enroll in additional courses during the semester in which the final internship occurs.
Internship Application Requirements and Dates of Importance
Final Internship Admission Requirements
- All coursework and incompletes except for the final internship and final internship seminar courses must be completed prior to beginning the final internship.
- Students who withdraw from or who have unsatisfactory grades in the field experiences or internships must petition the college before they will be allowed to repeat the internships.
- A combined grade point average of 2.5 in professional education and specialization course work as well as an overall USF GPA of 2.5.
- Complete all required coursework with a minimum grade of C- or higher.
Final Internship Exit Requirements:
- Complete coursework and any other university graduation requirements.
Fingerprinting Information
All agencies in Florida require students to complete the fingerprinting process prior to beginning date of internships. The cost of the fingerprinting process is the sole responsibility of the intern. Most Florida school districts screen in accordance with Florida Statute 435.03 or 435.04. Pinellas County uses 435.04 (Level 2) screening standard. Be sure to consult organizational policy for the agency in which you will be interning. Research Opportunities - College of Education
Undergraduate students in any degree program are able to participate in undergraduate research. Several options exist to show mentored undergraduate research activity on a student’s official transcript. Those who wish to enroll in an undergraduate research course should consult with their academic advisor to understand how the credit will apply towards the degree requirements. If no credit is needed, students may be eligible to enroll in the 0-credit IDS 4914 - Advanced Undergraduate Research Experience course. This course will not impact degree credits or GPA but will show on an official transcript and document the experience. The Office of High Impact Practices and Undergraduate Research (HIPUR) is able to assist with further inquiries.
