Professional Training Option Minor

The Professional Training Option (PTO) is an approved alternative teacher certification program designed for students interested in teaching at the secondary level in English, Social Science, or Science in the State of Florida. Qualified majors include: English, Journalism, History, Political Science, Biology, Psychology, and Environmental Science and Policy, and World Languages.

Graduation Requirements for the Program

Passing General Knowledge Test (GKT) scores must be submitted prior to graduation.

Certification requires submission of transcripts to the Florida Department of Education, as passing scores on the Professional Education Test and appropriate Subject Area portion of the Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE). For more on testing, please see www.fl.nesinc.com.

First Cluster

EEX 4070 - Integrating Exceptional Students in the Regular Classroom Credit(s): 2-3
FLE 4317 - Teaching Multilingual Students with Varying Backgrounds and Abilities Credit(s): 3

Second Cluster

EDG 4909 - Directed Studies Credit(s): 1-4
ESE 4341 - Secondary Teaching Methods Credit(s): 3
EDF 4430 - Measurement for Teachers Credit(s): 3
or
EDF 4440 - Measurement Concepts and Assessment of All Students Credit(s): 4

Third Cluster

ESE 4322 - Classroom Management for Diverse School and Society Credit(s): 3
EDG 4941 - Practicum in Secondary Teaching Credit(s): 3
Note: Both courses should be taken concurrently in final semester of minor completion.

GPA Requirements

An overall minimum GPA of 2.50 on all attempted hours.
A minimum 2.5 GPA is required in all coursework.

Grading Requirements

A minimum grade of C- is required in all coursework.
