Mark Engelhardt has long had a passion for behavioral healthcare. As a full-time faculty member and research associate in the Department of Mental Health, Law and Policy, Mr. Engelhardt is a recognized national expert in the area of permanent supportive housing, homelessness, and acute care systems.
In 2014, Mr. Engelhardt made the world his classroom as he launched Education Abroad’s Ireland Global Behavioral Healthcare – Focus on Homelessness in the U.S., Ireland and Europe program. In partnership with Trinity College and two leading homeless providers in Ireland, the program gives students the opportunity to engage with several prominent experts and gain a global understanding of international policies, programs, and practices in behavioral health and homelessness.
Because of his efforts in the field of behavioral healthcare, Mr. Engelhardt was the recipient of the 2018 Harry Wexler INNOVATION Award from the Board of Directors of the National Treatment Accountability for Safer Communities (TASC). Mr. Engelhardt was recognized for his years of experience in promoting treatment interventions for people with co-occurring mental health and substance disorders in lieu of incarceration and implementing evidence-based practices in recovery.
In June, Mr. Engelhardt will once again embark to Ireland. When asked about the program, a former student said, “I feel that I have left this course with a new outlook on life—the lives of people who are homeless, the lives of individuals that work to prevent and end homelessness, the lives of my friends and family, and my own life.”
