Sierra Francis, Class of 2018
August 7, 2018
While pursuing her B.A. in Political Science and International Studies, Sierra had the opportunity to study abroad with the USF in Russia program. She studied at Russia’s most prestigious university, Moscow State University, where she was enrolled in intensive language and culture studies. Sierra got to tour famous sites including Red Square, the Kremlin, and the Hermitage Museum. She practiced Russian by visiting local restaurants and viewing the Russian Ballet at the Bolshoi Theater. Sierra experienced a great deal of self-discovery while abroad. She learned that she has strong critical thinking skills but struggles with directions and budgeting. “Studying abroad allowed me an opportunity to be truly independent. Finding this sense of independence contributed to my overall personal and professional success.”
Currently, Sierra serves as a regional representative and community liaison for the State of Florida within one of their governmental offices. “To students going abroad, I encourage you to take advantage of every opportunity presented to you while abroad. You may be exhausted after a long day of class, but those moments abroad are once in a lifetime. That hour nap you took was an hour missed. Be smart, be safe, and be adventurous.”
