Recent USF graduate Nicolas Castillo Rodriguez plans to obtain a Chartered Financial Analyst designation while pursuing a degree in Finance. Castillo was born and raised in Cartagena, Colombia, majoring in business administration and accounting at the Universidad del Norte. The CFA designation is a globally recognized credential demonstrating expertise in investment analysis and financial management, and Castillo credits his time at USF for preparing him for a credential that is the gold standard in the investment industry.

“I always dreamed of coming to the U.S. to study because of the endless opportunities this country offers,” Castillo says. “For me, transferring to USF was one of the proudest and most challenging decisions at that point in my life.”

When Castillo came to USF and started at the Muma College of Business, the first thing he did was join as many organizations on campus as possible. “It was unique to meet people with similar motivation and enthusiasm levels as me,” Castillo says. “There were a lot of people who guided me in my first semester. I am always seeking people who inspire and motivate me to continue to pursue my dreams ...  I remember the first Investment Club meeting I attended was amazing. I appreciated students taking time to help and advise me on how to get an internship.”

During his time at USF, Castillo was a part of the Real Estate Society, Investment Club as a team analyst, Scholars of Finance, American Red Cross Club as treasurer, and Business Development Club. “These positions really helped prepare me for my internship and career,” Castillo says. “Being in a leadership position helps you learn how to lead and work on a team.” He was also a part of the Student Managed Investment Fund directed by Dr. (Leo) Chen. “It was my first time working as an equity research analyst,” Castillo recalls. “It was very insightful to learn how research and the stock market work.”

During the summer of 2024, Castillo interned for S&P Global. “Being in New York for the summer, working in the financial services industry, was like living a dream,” Castillo says. “Participating in person at management meetings with big companies and meeting the executive board, like the CEO and CFO, was a very insightful experience.” He worked as a credit analyst intern for transportation, auto, aerospace, and defense teams. Before starting at S&P Global, Castillo interned as a financial analyst at Banco de Bogotá, one of the largest financial institutions in Colombia. Castillo also was recognized in the college's "25 Under 25" program.  “It proves my active involvement in campus activities, and it's something I really feel proud of,” he says.

For prospective students from Colombia, Castillo advises them to take advantage of everything USF has to offer. “Don’t just go to class. Join clubs, network with students and alumni,” Castillo says. “Also, I advise that from the first day you set foot on campus, start working on your resume, LinkedIn, and networking skills. These will be key to securing an internship and a full-time job after graduation.” Now graduated, Castillo is studying for his CFA Level 1 exam while working full time, envisioning himself staying in the financial services industry for the long term.
