Decayed Tree Removal in MLK Plaza
Sand Live Oak Cluster at MLK Plaza
On June 11, 2024 one of the trees in a cluster of six Sand Live Oaks located at MLK Plaza fell. A certified arborist from USF’s Department of Land Use and Planning conducted a thorough inspection of the fallen tree and the remaining five trees in the cluster. When the tree fell, it revealed extensive root decay affecting all six trees in the cluster. Severe decay was also found in the trunk of the fallen tree. Options to preserve the remaining trees were explored. However, the extent of the decay posed an unacceptable safety risk to our campus community. Because of this, the entire cluster of trees had to be removed.
