Anthropology doctoral candidate selected as USF’s first student veteran recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Student Program
Jonathan Rodriguez is one of six USF students selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for the 2023-2024 academic year and one of 2,200 students nationwide selected for this prestigious award focusing on international education, exchange, and mutual understanding. He is the first USF student veteran selected for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

CAS celebrates exceptional scholars at the Student Success Celebration Luncheon
The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) celebrated 22 exceptional scholars at a Student Success Celebration Luncheon. The event, held on April 28, and co-sponsored by CAS Dean’s Advisory Council members Michelle Turman ‘00 and Nikki Zolkos ‘03, brought together faculty, students, and donors to share the impact of private support on student experiences.

Spring CAS grads share student experience and look ahead to the future
The University of South Florida (USF) awarded more than 7,100 degrees during spring commencement May 5-7. The ceremonies included recipients of 5,430 bachelor’s, 1,492 master’s, 221 doctoral degrees and eight specialist degrees. The College of Arts and Sciences accounted for over 2,000 of the total degrees awarded.

The Florida Book Awards, coordinated by the Florida State University Libraries, announced winners for the nation’s most comprehensive state book awards program. The program, established in 2006, celebrates the best of Florida literature.

World Languages celebrates Latin culture with annual Spanish Fair
After a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the USF College of Arts and Sciences Department of World Languages hosted its 13th Annual Spanish Fair and Expo in April. The fair, which began in 2007, showcases the department’s graduate and undergraduate Spanish programs and provides an opportunity for USF and surrounding Tampa community groups to conduct outreach.

The USF College of Art and Sciences’ (CAS) Democracy and Citizenship Speakers Series featured three experts on political communication and media—Drs. Miyoung Chong (assistant professor in the Department of Journalism and Digital Communication), Jianing Li (assistant professor in the Department of Communication), and Joshua Scacco (associate professor in the Department of Communication).

MURP students place third in national competition to improve a Philadelphia neighborhood
USF College of Arts and Sciences Master of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP) program students Beneetta Mary Jose, Abdul Samad Agha, Varshini Renikunta, and Aditi Sugeerappa Hoti earned third place for their design in the American Planning Association National Planning Competition in April.

Global classroom collaboration with Moldova wins international partnerships award
A global classroom experience that brought together USF St. Petersburg students with peers in Moldova to conduct joint research while an international humanitarian crisis was unfolding nearby received the inaugural International Partnerships Award from the American Political Science Association (APSA) and the Political Studies Association (PSA).

Psychology professor receives prestigious congressional fellowship to work on Capitol Hill
USF St. Petersburg Psychology Professor Tiffany Chenneville has been awarded the American Psychological Association’s (APA) Springfield Policy Congressional Fellowship, which will allow her to work with a member of Congress on policies to advance the health and well-being of LGBTQIA+ populations.
