MISSION STATEMENT

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Psychology offers students a well-rounded liberal arts education, relevant to many areas of study both inside and outside of the social and behavioral sciences. The program provides excellent training for qualified students who wish to pursue graduate work in such disciplines as Clinical, Cognitive and Neural Sciences or Industrial Psychology, Education, Gerontology, Counseling, Management, Medicine, Law, and other human service programs. The undergraduate program emphasizes the breadth of psychology while allowing students electives to pursue a particular aspect of the field in-depth.

Program Level Outcomes

Upon completion of the B.A. in Psychology at USF, the student should show competence across the following five main areas:

DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The graduate can

  • Describe the key concepts in Psychology.
  • Describe the key content areas in Psychology.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

The graduate can

  • Communicate ideas, methods, and results via written reports, including effective use of tables, graphs, and figures.
  • Verbally express concepts and data clearly.

CRITICALLY EVALUATE INFORMATION AND CLAIMS

The graduate can

  • Demonstrate the ability to evaluate information quality from different kinds of source and describe biases present in information evaluation.
  • Demonstrate how data and statistics can be used to selectively support or refute assertions.

ANALYZE DATA AND INTERPRET DATA

The graduate can

  • Demonstrate the correct application and interpretation of statistics, including the use of appropriate software packages.
  • Identify dependent and independent variables and select appropriate statistical tests.

PRACTICE ETHICAL AWARENESS

The graduate can

  • Apply ethical standards to evaluate psychological science and identify ethical problems in research and in clinical practice.
  • Become IRB certified to conduct ethical research with human participants.
