Gil S. Katz has taught Double Bass at USF since 2018. Katz’s diverse abilities, from classical to popular music and jazz, have led him to perform in a wide spectrum of music. He is the founding member of Duo NONA, for which he and his wife, cellist Nadine Trudel, compose and arrange their repertoire. With Duo NONA he has appeared as guest soloist with the five-time ASCAP/League of American Orchestras Adventurous Programming Awards recipient San José Chamber Orchestra, premiering his composition “Tribal” — a commission by the San José Chamber Orchestra.
Since his debut at the age of 14, Katz has performed with various symphony orchestras around the United States. During his undergraduate years at the University of Southern California, Katz appeared as guest soloist with Deutsches Kammerorchester in the Schauspielhaus, Berlin. He then went on to complete his Master of Music degree on a full scholarship at Boston University with Ed Barker. In the recording studios, Katz has worked with such artists as Barbara Streisand, Barry Gibb and John Secada. Katz has performed at numerous music festivals, including Tanglewood, Aspen and the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music under the baton of Marin Alsop as well as holding the position of Principal Double Bass of the Utah Festival Opera.
Currently, Katz is Principal double bass with the Sarasota Opera Orchestra as well as regularly playing in the bass sections of the Naples Philharmonic Orchestra and the Sarasota Orchestra.
