Jay Coble is professor of trumpet at the University of South Florida in Tampa where he has been on the faculty since 1998. His responsibilities are teaching applied trumpet at the undergraduate and graduate level and coaching trumpet ensembles. Prior to coming to USF he was a freelance trumpet artist in the Los Angeles area where he recorded for television, movies, commercials, and CDs. He has toured North America with the Buddy Rich Band (1982) and worldwide with singer Tom Jones (1987-1990.)

Dr. Coble earned a doctorate (DMA) from the University of Southern California, a master’s degree from Indiana University, and an undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University. His teachers have been William Adam, Joe Phelps, Roy Poper, and Boyde Hood. ¬ He has been Principal Trumpet for Opera Tampa since 2007, which has afforded him the privilege of performing with Andrea Bocelli, Rene Fleming, Katherine Jenkins, and Placido Domingo. He also performs as lead trumpet on National Touring Broadway Productions at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts. Dr. Coble was Principal Trumpet with the Classical Music Festival Orchestra from 2008-2011. This festival is held annually at the Esterhazy Palace in Eisenstadt, Austria. In 2011 he performed the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Festival Orchestra in the Haydnsaal of the Esterhazy Palace.

In 2018 Dr. Coble was nominated for a Grammy for his work with the Jazz Surge on Chuck Owen’s recording “Whispers on the Wind.” He has also recorded on the Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Platinum Album “Night Castle” (2009). Other recordings include numerous sessions for Hal Leonard Publishing, four CD’s with jazz professor Chuck Owen’s Jazz Surge. He has also been on two of jazz professor Jack Wilkins’ CD’s and recorded the jazz trumpet etudes for Professor Wilkins’ “Essential Jazz Etudes…The Blues” published by Mel Bay. He also has a recording with his own trumpet, trombone and piano trio Confluences, featuring Tom Brantley on Trombone and Corey Holt Merenda on Piano.

Dr. Coble is a Yamaha Performing Artist. He has been invited on several occasions to visit The People’s Republic of China to teach and perform as a soloist. He has performed in twenty-five countries and has presented solo appearances in five (United States, Canada, China, Poland, Austria.)
