The University of South Florida percussion program is designed to provide a well-rounded and balanced curriculum with many performance opportunities including solo, percussion ensemble, marimba ensemble, jazz, marching, bands, orchestra and new developing musical styles. Students study and perform on all the major percussion instruments including keyboard percussion, timpani, snare and standard accessories. The percussion suite area includes large practice rooms and an exceptional collection of percussion instruments.
With USF located in a large metropolitan area, students find many unique opportunities to develop their skills in performance and teaching. The percussion studio is often able to bring in guest artists and specialists who live or may be touring in the area for clinics, concerts or additional private study. Advanced students (even at the undergrad level) often get an opportunity to perform in high profile concerts with major touring shows, area professional orchestras, operas, church programs, etc. as well as teaching opportunities in area schools. Opportunities to study various styles of world music also exist in the Tampa area. Among the events hosted here at USF has been the annual McCormick Marimba Festival which attracted major artists and university marimba groups from around the nation. The USF Percussion Ensemble also records on a regular basis at the world class Springs Theatre Recording Studio located near downtown Tampa.
