Meet the Team
Malissa Egan
Malissa is an Air Force Veteran who served 10 years in the Security Forces career field. She is a full-time graduate student in the Master of Social Work program at the University of South Florida. She earned her undergraduate degree in Multidisciplinary Social Sciences with concentrations in Psychology and Multidisciplinary Behavioral Sciences.
While in the military, Malissa taught an interpersonal violence and suicide prevention training. Afterwards, some participants stayed behind to share their personal stories and how they too have silently struggled. Through that experience, Malissa felt a calling to find a way to diminish the stigma surrounding mental illness and interpersonal violence in the military.
Malissa’s research interests include stigma-reduction and how it relates to help-seeking for mental health needs among active duty members and veterans. Her future goals aim to contribute to policy and culture changes within the military and veteran structures.
