The College of Behavioral and Community Sciences (CBCS) on Friday celebrated the establishment of the Arthur Guilford Diversity Fund in Speech-Language Pathology Scholarship, which will provide support to full- and part-time graduate students pursuing a speech-language pathology degree in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) on all USF campuses. Preference for the scholarship will be given to students of varying ethnicities, orientations, backgrounds, and abilities to encourage under-represented populations in the field to consider a degree in speech-language pathology.
“This fund will truly make a difference in the lives of our students and will build diverse cohorts in the field,” said CBCS Dean Julie Serovich. “None of this would have been possible without Dr. Guilford and the thoughtfulness and support of alumni Paula Sullivan and Dr. Doreen Oyadamori. We greatly appreciate their commitment to the college and to our students.”
Guilford has a long history at USF. A native Floridian, he began his career at USF in 1975 as an assistant professor in CSD. He served as chair of the department for 15 years, during which he was instrumental in significantly expanding the program. He was appointed regional chancellor of USF Sarasota-Manatee in 2007. After retiring in 2015, Guilford continues to be involved at USF through his frequent attendance at football games, generous philanthropic efforts, and genuine commitment to the university community.
