USF Corporate Training & Professional Education launches new Information Security Governance, Risk, and Compliance certificate program

With data breaches costing organizations an average of $4.5 million, the demand for skilled cybersecurity professionals has never been more crucial. To address this urgent need, USF’s Office of Corporate Training and Professional Education (CTPE) has launched a cutting-edge program on information security, governance, risk, and compliance.

Over 3,200 data breaches occurred in the last year alone, impacting more than 350 million people across the U.S. To help tackle this widespread issue, the InfoSec GRC Analyst program is designed to bridge the gap between industry demands and the skills of entry-level and transitioning professionals. Through real-world case studies, participants will master the basics of information security, threat identification, risk mitigation strategies, and assessing security risks.

"As cybersecurity threats become more prevalent and sophisticated, the need for professionals who are trained in reducing cyber risks continues to grow. The University of South Florida's expertise and partnerships in the business community make us uniquely positioned to help address this need, and we are proud to offer this innovative certificate program for those who are looking to upskill and advance in their careers," said USF President Rhea Law. "We are grateful to U.S. Rep. Greg Steube for his leadership in helping secure the funding to create this program and for his continued support of USF, military veterans and first responders."

Offered free for the first 250 people who register, priority enrollment will be given to those in governmental, military, and first-responder roles in the Tampa Bay and Sarasota areas. The training will be provided fully online to accommodate the busy schedules of working professionals.

“By offering a mostly self-paced, yet supported, learning experience, we aim to empower individuals from various backgrounds to pursue rewarding careers in cybersecurity,” said Mark Koulianos, assistant vice president for university-community partnerships and leader of the CTPE team.

Applied Learning:

Participants will learn the foundations of information security, how to navigate complex compliance issues, and how to implement security controls to reduce cybersecurity risks.

The four modules cover:

Module 1

-       Learn the fundamentals of information security, focusing on identifying threats and vulnerabilities.

Module 2

-       Learn how governance, risk, and compliance actions work for or against information security.

Module 3

-       Learn how to complete information security assessments, remediation planning, and reporting.

Module 4

-       Synthesize knowledge, complete authentic audit exercises, and create reports demonstrating newfound skills.

The program’s comprehensive curriculum offers practical insights through real-world case studies and exercises. With interactive hands-on labs, participants will learn how to apply their knowledge to authentic situations using industry-standard frameworks and practices.

The modules will also teach participants to use innovative tools, like generative artificial intelligence, to help develop information security policies.

After completing the program, participants will walk away with the essential knowledge to excel as an information security professional and earn a Credly badge to display their expertise.

Plus, with a national median salary of $119,869 for information security analysts, participants will be well-prepared to land roles with significant earning opportunities.

Expert Instruction:

USF Innovative Education’s learning designers collaborated with industry leaders at CBIZ Pivot Point Security to develop the certificate, several of whom are instructing the program. They have over 50 years of collective experience in information technology and security.

Participants will develop a comprehensive understanding of the field through these experts who have a holistic understanding of the interconnected nature of governance, risk, and compliance and its impact on organizations.

The instructors have a broad range of professional experience, from the federal government to private industry roles. They’ve secured high-value assets and information and are eager to share their wisdom. With technical prowess, industry insights, and a passion for mentoring, they will guide participants to achieve similar success in the world of cybersecurity.

Participants will receive personalized feedback on assignments and the final project and have access to connect with instructors during office hours and via Canvas messaging.

Register Now:

To succeed in the program, participants will need basic computer organization, architecture, and mathematics knowledge before starting the certificate. While there is no minimum educational requirement, some technology experience or education will be helpful.

Access to the content begins July 8, and participants have 60 days to complete the program once they open the first module. Upon completing the certificate, participants will receive a Credly digital badge recognized by industry professionals to display on their LinkedIn, resume, CV, etc.
