Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Mathematics Education

The Master of Education (M.Ed.) in Curriculum and Instruction (C&I) with a Concentration in Mathematics Education is designed for educators with at least two years of teaching or relevant experience who seek to deepen their expertise in mathematics education. The program also offers a pathway to meet credentialing requirements for teaching mathematics or mathematics education courses at the undergraduate level, including dual enrollment courses and teacher preparation programs.

Program Highlights

  • Credit Hours: 30 (10 courses)
  • Flexible Formats: Courses are offered in multiple formats, including:
    • Fully online
    • Hybrid (with limited in-person meetings during evenings or on Saturdays)

Curriculum Overview

The program’s 30 credit hours are distributed across three areas:

  • Core Courses (6 credit hours)
    • All M.Ed. students complete 6 credit hours of foundational courses shared across all Curriculum and Instruction concentrations.
  • Concentration in Mathematics Education (18 credit hours). Students complete six courses (18 credit hours) tailored to mathematics education
    • One mandatory course: Current Trends in Mathematics Education
    • Five additional courses (15 credit hours): Graduate-level mathematics and/or mathematics education courses.

Credentialing Options:

  • To teach mathematics coursework (e.g., dual enrollment or undergraduate-level mathematics courses), students must complete 16 graduate-level credit hours in mathematics courses. This includes:
    • All five concentration courses as graduate-level mathematics courses.
    • At least one elective as a graduate-level mathematics course.
  • To teach mathematics education coursework (e.g., teacher preparation courses), students must complete 18 graduate-level credit hours in mathematics education courses. This includes all six concentration courses as mathematics education courses.
  • Electives (6 credit hours)
    • Students select two graduate-level courses (5000 or 6000 level) from any field.
  • Students pursuing credentialing for dual enrollment or undergraduate-level mathematics courses must use at least one elective for a graduate-level mathematics course.
