Each year, the National Science Data Fabric (NSDF) selects students, early career researchers, and faculty from institutions across the country as NSDF Fellows. The NSDF awards fellowships to researchers who demonstrate strong research capabilities in areas aligned with high-performance computing and computational sciences, as well as proposing impactful research. This year, USF CSE PhD student Hanieh Toutouni was included among those selected for this honor.

Third year CSE PhD student Hanieh Toutouni was selected for her research in optimizing GPU-accelerated algorithms for large-scale simulations, specifically spatial indexing and molecular dynamics.  “Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are essential for understanding the physical and chemical behaviors of complex systems, but they are also computationally intensive,” said Hanieh. “My research introduces a novel GPU-accelerated MD framework designed to address these challenges by improving performance and scalability through advanced data management and optimized GPU resource handling.”

Hanieh’s advisor, Professor Yicheng Tu, researches large-scale data management and parallel computing. He has also worked on data stream systems, computational biology, and application of control theory in computer systems.

As part of the fellowship, Hanieh will attend the Super Computing (SC) Conference, an international conference for high performance computing, networking, storage, and analysis. At the conference, she will participate in NSDF-sponsored sessions, including the EduHPC-24 workshop and the panel “Creating Inclusive Scientific Communities in the Information Age: Can Equity Democratize Data-Intensive Research?”

“Attending SC24 as an NSDF fellow is an incredible opportunity to engage with the forefront of supercomputing innovation. This fellowship provides a platform for me to expand my knowledge, network with industry leaders, and contribute to impactful advancements in high-performance computing,” said Hanieh.
