Two University of South Florida faculty members named NAI fellows
Two University of South Florida faculty members, recognized for their groundbreaking discoveries and innovations in chemical engineering to treat cancer and other challenging diseases and nanomaterials engineering for multifunctional manufacturing applications, are among the 2024 Fellows selected to the National Academy of Inventors (NAI). Election to NAI Fellows is the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.
Levi Thompson Named College of Engineering Dean
The University of South Florida announced the appointment of Levi Thompson as the new dean of the College of Engineering. Thompson is a highly accomplished researcher who brings strong leadership and administrative experience, including most recently serving as the College of Engineering dean at the University of Delaware and previously as a faculty member at the University of Michigan.

Adaptive Lessons Funded by $383k NSF Grant: Principal Investigators, Artur Kaw and Rasim Guldiken
Autar Kaw and Rasim Guldiken, USF College of Engineering Faculty, is revolutionizing education through adaptive learning technology. Supported by a $383,172 NSF grant, this project integrates tailored pre-class lessons into key engineering courses, aiming to improve student engagement, motivation, and success. The initiative also generates data-driven insights to refine learning strategies and promote best practices in STEM education.
USF sets new record with $738 million in research funding
The milestone comes during USF’s first full fiscal year as a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and helps demonstrate its impact as one of the nation’s most research-intensive institutions. The new record brings the university closer to reaching its goal of securing $1 billion in annual research funding.
USF Microbiome Research Awards Granted to USF Faculty: Daniel Yeh & Jody Harwood
USF faculty Daniel Yeh and Jody Harwood have been awarded the 2024-2025 USF Microbiome Research Award for developing sustainable wastewater systems for lunar habitats. Their innovative project combines environmental engineering and microbiology to tackle waste treatment in space, with potential applications for Earth.

Cyberherd Wins First Place at EC-Council CTF
The CyberHerd 2 team won first place at the EC-Council CTF, with the team made up of three Cyberherd members: Yeran Garnage (Cybersecurity major, Junior), Alex Sanders (Cybersecurity, Senior), and Samir Jihadi (Computer Science, Sophomore).

CyberHerd wins 2nd place at Southeast Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition
USF CyberHerd competed in the Southeast Collegiate Penetration Testing Competition (CPTC) and came in second, scoring a mere 0.009 points behind the first-place winners. “SECPTC is a very intense and fast paced penetration testing competition.” Said Waseem.

Olukemi Akintewe, USF Engineering Professor, Recognized as an AIMBE Emerging Leader
Olukemi Akintewe, an Associate Professor of Instruction in Medical Engineering at USF, has been named an inaugural AIMBE Emerging Leader. Recognized for her advocacy for women and underrepresented groups in STEM, she leads efforts to improve retention and support systems for these students. Dr. Akintewe will be honored at the AIMBE Annual Event in March 2025 in Washington, D.C., where she looks forward to collaborating with other leaders and mentors.
