Assistant Professor Giovanni Ciampaglia was invited as a guest panelist for a live
episode of 1A on the topic of journalism and fact-checking. Ciampaglia spoke about
his research on the spread of misinformation on social media and on the automation
of fact-checking through artificial intelligence techniques.
“We need to bridge [the] gap between when a story is injected [on social media] and
[when] fact-checkers are able to fact-check it, and that's where automation in the
the editorial and investigative process is needed,” Ciampaglia said.
Ciampaglia hopes to create algorithms that will deter manipulation in a wider scheme.
