From Cuba to Tampa, this alumna's path always led to health care
Originally born in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba, USF College of Public Health (COPH) alumna Alicia Gomez Fuego grew up in a small town outside of the city called San Luis on a small farm where large quantities of tobacco were planted and livestock raised.

Twenty-seven faculty members recognized with Outstanding Research Achievement Awards
Twenty-seven USF faculty members were recognized on Tuesday, September 17 with Outstanding Research Achievement Awards. The COPH's Judith Rijnhart was recognized for her distinguished contributions to the field of epidemiology and expertise in mediation analysis to investigate causal mechanisms that underlie exposure and intervention effects of cognitive health outcomes in older adults.

International symposium explores migration and health in the Americas
The COPH played a prominent role in the first-ever International Symposium on Migration and Health in the Americas, held Sept. 9-10 at the City of Knowledge in Panama. Led by Dr. Arlene Calvo, the event brought together experts from across the Americas to address the growing intersection of migration and public health, with Panama as a key focal point.

Public health faculty contributes to ACS cancer report
In September, the American Cancer Society released Cancer Facts & Figures for Hispanic/Latino People 2024 on cancer.org in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. The report was a collaboration between Anat Saka, Dr. Paulo Pinheiro and the COPH's Dr. Dina Martinez Tyson.
