High-impact research earns recognition for CMS faculty

The list highlights 10 current CMS faculty members and two emeritus faculty, recognizing both career-long and single-year citation achievements.

Faculty from the USF College of Marine Science are featured in a recent report by Elsevier and Stanford University that ranks high-impact researchers from around the world.

The study uses citation metrics to determine a percentile rank of the top two percent of researchers across 22 fields of study, based on the standard Science-Metrix classification.

“We are well aware that our faculty at the USF College of Marine Science include many world-class researchers,” said Tom Frazer, professor and dean of CMS. “Still, seeing reports like this one reinforces the fact that our college is one of the top marine science research institutions not only in the country, but also across the globe.”

  • Chuanmin Hu ranked #47 in the field of Geological and Geomatics Engineering (69,076 total published researchers).
  • Robert Byrne and Al Hine ranked #16 and #300 respectively in the field of Oceanography (16,080 total published researchers).
  • Mya Breitbart ranked #710 in the field of Microbiology (204,759 total published researchers).
  • Pamela Hallock-Muller ranked #90 in the field of Paleontology (21,817 total published researchers).
  • Frank Muller-Karger and Brad Seibel ranked #307 and #482 respectively in the field of Marine Biology and Hydrobiology (49,763 total published researchers).
  • Don Chambers, Gary Mitchum, and Robert Weisberg ranked #848, #1,621, and #1,078 respectively in the field of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (75,072 total published researchers).
  • Steven Murawski ranked #157 in the field of Fisheries (40,293 total published researchers).
