The University of South Florida (USF) continues to increase the availability of high-impact educational experiences to support student success and recently celebrated its status as the number one producer of Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship recipients among large institutions nationally for the 2021-22 academic year.

The “Top Producer” ranking is a first for USF and was announced in November 2023 by the U.S. State Department, which sponsors the Gilman Scholarship. The competitive program supports Pell Grant recipients with awards up to $5,000 for study or internships abroad.

In 2021-22, 64 USF students received $272,500 toward their study abroad programs. The Office of National Scholars (ONS) advises students applying for the Gilman Scholarship at USF. ONS’s high touch mentoring with applicants not only prepares them for the application, but also for their study abroad experiences.

“The University of South Florida is proud to prioritize advising students applying for the Gilman Scholarship Program. As an institution with a sizable population of Pell Grant recipients, the Gilman Scholarship is instrumental in helping send students abroad for educational programs and internships,” said Lauren Roberts, assistant director of USF's Office of National Scholars. “We see experiential learning and education abroad as vital in preparing students for the global workplace, regardless of income level. USF's strategic areas of focus include global and national security, sustainability, and social justice.”

Students in this cohort traveled to 18 different countries across five continents, studying everything from marine biology to business to foreign language.
