Boren Awards
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships are funding opportunities for students (undergraduate and graduate) to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. national security interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. Boren Scholarships are for undergraduate students and Fellowships are for graduate students. Boren Scholars commit to working in the federal government in the field of national security for at least one year after graduation.
ELIGIBILITY
- U.S. Citizen
- Undergraduate or graduate student
- Semester or academic year-long language study abroad program (or 8+ weeks for STEM majors) studying a critical language
- Student must remain matriculated during the duration of the study abroad program
Please note: The list of available languages and countries for study is available on the Boren website. Some languages require previous study, while others are available to begin as a novice.
IDEAL CANDIDATES
- Planning to study Boren's preferred languages and locations
- Planning to study abroad for longer periods of time and studying language intensively (at least twenty hours per week)
- Studying language relevant to student's chosen field
- Goals to work in national security and/or public service throughout career
TIMELINE

When should you engage with ONS?
October
Students will begin working on first drafts of application essays three to five months before the national deadline (after our initial appointment), along with providing the names of recommendation letter writers for review.
