A Visit to Publix: Exploring Sustainability at Terrace Ridge Plaza, Tampa

From Classroom to Community: PCGS Student Phyu Sabai Mon Uncovers Real-World Sustainability Efforts at Publix

Publix Students

Recently, our current student Phyu Sabai Mon had the opportunity to take a field trip with her class to the Publix store at Terrace Ridge Plaza in Tampa. She said it was an eye-opening experience, especially as they met with Dave, the Sustainability Team Lead for Publix. He guided them through the various sustainability initiatives the company has implemented, showcasing their commitment to responsible consumption and environmental stewardship.

Below are some key insights from the student:

“ Water Restoration and Environmental Support

One of the most impactful initiatives Dave shared with us was Publix’s Water Restoration Program. Through grants, Publix supports the Everglades restoration efforts, ensuring that one of Florida’s most vital ecosystems is protected and revitalized. Additionally, Publix actively funds various environmental organizations, contributing to conservation efforts beyond just water restoration.

Circular Economy Practices at Publix

Publix Board

A key theme of our visit was Publix’s approach to the circular economy—minimizing waste, reusing materials, and recycling wherever possible. At the store, we observed several sustainability-driven practices, including:

      •     Plastic Recycling: Publix encourages customers to recycle plastic bags and other plastic materials at designated drop-off points in the store.
      •     Waste Separation and Management: The store has a structured waste bin system to ensure different types of waste are properly sorted and managed, reducing landfill contributions.
      •     Cardboard Recycling: Dave showed us the store’s cardboard recycling machines, which compact and prepare used cardboard for reuse, reducing the need for virgin materials.
      •     Food Donations: Fruits and other produce that are still edible but not suitable for sale are donated to food banks and food stations, ensuring they help people in need rather than going to waste.

Reducing Waste and Responsible Consumption

Publix is committed to reducing waste across all aspects of its operations. They focus on product packaging that aligns with circular economy principles, ensuring packaging materials are either recyclable or made from recycled content. Additionally, their waste reduction efforts extend to energy conservation, water efficiency, and sustainable sourcing of products.

Emission Reduction and Energy Efficiency

Another impressive aspect of Publix’s sustainability initiatives is its focus on emission reduction. The store actively works on:

      •     Energy Efficiency: When renovating or remodeling, Publix integrates energy-efficient technologies to reduce power consumption.
      •     Water Conservation: Publix implements measures to optimize water use in stores, further supporting their sustainability goals.
      •     Waste Management in the Energy Sector: The company continually looks for ways to reduce waste generation and maximize recycling opportunities in all store operations.

Final Thoughts

Publix Students

Our visit to Publix at Terrace Ridge Plaza was both educational and inspiring. It was incredible to see firsthand how a major retailer is prioritizing sustainability and responsible consumption. From water restoration efforts to waste management and emissions reduction, Publix is making a tangible difference in protecting the environment.

This experience not only deepened my understanding of corporate sustainability but also reinforced the importance of making responsible choices as consumers. Publix’s commitment to environmental stewardship serves as a great example of how businesses can operate sustainably while still providing high-quality products and services. “

These field trips are essential for improving students' sustainability skills and fostering career growth. Dr. Philippides's class is merely one of the many courses we provide that engage you in hands-on sustainability initiatives.
